The Work of Our Hands and Hearts

Prayer Team

St. Columba’s has a strong commitment to the power of healing prayer.  One way we express that is to make available members of the Prayer team during the Sunday morning Celebration of Holy Communion.  Anyone hwo coms to the prayer team receies prayer through the ancient tradition of laying on of hands.  Following Jesus’ example to pray, in the sight of God and the congregation, the intercessors listen and pray without question or judgement.  Confidentiality is strictly enforced among all who serve in this ministry.

Prayer List

From time to time a particular prayer is needed for oneself or others.  St. Columba’s maintains a continuous prayer list at Sunday services.  You may send your prayer requests to stcolumba@myfairpoint.net

Radical Hospitality

St. Columba and the Crane

Columba had the following prophecy:

“on the third day from today, sit on the sea-shore and look out in the western part of this island, for from the northern part of Ireland, a certain guest, a crane (a heron), beaten by the winds during long and circuitous aerial flights, will arrive after the ninth hour of the day, very weary and fatigued, and its strength being almost gone, it will fall down before you and lie on the beach.  Take care to lift it up tenderly, and carry it to some neighbouring house, and while it is there hospitably received, diligently feed it, attending to it for three days and three nights, and then, refreshed, it will return with fully recovered strength to its former sweet home in Scotia whence it came . . .”

The heron, related to the crane, is a common bird of our area.  Therefore we have placed a heron over our main entry as a symbol to remind us to offer radical hospitality and healing to all.

Care Committee

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Prayer shawls, made by loving hands with tender prayer are offered for blessing one Sunday each month.  The person they are intended for is lovingly prayed for as the shawl is being knit.  When finished, it is delivered by one or more of the knitters and lovingly wrapped in its warm embrace.  As of January 2009 the Prayer Shawl Ministry has given away over 200 shawls.
